File Formats
We primarily use Adobe® products in our design department. For most print projects that do not require multiple pages we rely on Adobe Illustrator. We try to create as much of our artwork as possible in this vector format to avoid degradations in quality when scaling artwork. We encourage you to do the same. We can accept most industry-standard formats for CMYK projects, but using Adobe® will likely ensure the fastest turnaround time. Photoshop is a raster image editing package and should mainly be used for the manipulation of images and photographs. It is not an ideal tool for designing print pieces, especially with very limited support for spot colors.
Resolution
Most pieces (except large format) require a resolution of 300dpi or better at desired printed size. Look for our future article on resolution.
Fonts
In general, we do not accept artwork that contains fonts. All fonts should be converted to paths/outlines or rasterized into final flattened artwork.
Bleed
For projects that include an option for bleed, we require 1/8″ on each side for a total of 1/4″ added to each dimension.
Full Color Business Cards, Letterheads, Brochures, etc.
Most of the business cards and standard business materials we provide are printed on a digital cmyk press. This is a low-cost option and provides for a lot of flexibility in the artwork setup. Your main concerns in submitting artwork for these projects to us is format/bleed. Most cmyk projects allow for bleed (bleed is a process whereby a piece is printed to slightly larger dimensions, then trimmed to eliminate any white borders, the artwork will appear to “run off” the piece). This means when laying out a business card at the standard size of 3″ by 2.5″, you will want to make your artwork 3.25″ by 2.75″, and the excess will be trimmed off. We require all artwork to have 1/8″ bleed on all sides, resulting in an extra 1/4″ in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions.
Note: CMYK printing is not extremely reliable for exact color reproduction. You should expect some variation between pieces caused by a multitude of factors including but not limited to: stock, coating, surrounding elements/whitespace. If you are highly concerned about exact color reproduction, please inquire about spot color printing.
Spot Color ProjectsColor Projects
In the event that you want to ensure accurate color reproduction, we suggest the use of spot color printing. Most products are available using this method and some are exclusively printed in spot color. Spot color pieces are usually limited to only a few colors, and may or may not allow for screens/tints. Many of our promotional products are only printed in spot color and typically we can provide several “standard” colors that do not require a mixing/color match charge. If you have a specific Pantone® color that you use in your branding and it is not available as a standard color, we can use that Pantone® color number to match your color for a small fee.
